2013 Influenza Vaccination Campaign
The National Department of Health (NDOH), Communicable Diseases Control Cluster (CDC) initiated once a year nationwide influenza vaccination campaign beginning 2010 targeting specific groups of people who are at increased risk for severe influenza.
In 2013, the CDC Cluster in collaboration with other Units (EPI, HIV and Chronic Diseases), Provinces, Department of Correctional Services, National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) were involved in planning the influenza vaccination campaign, scheduled for March - April. The WCO is working with NDoH in monitoring campaign and will participate in the post vaccination campaign assessment of vaccine uptake planned second half of April 2013.
Since influenza vaccine remains the primary means of preventing seasonal influenza infections and mitigating the associated morbidity and mortality in high risk individuals, the influenza vaccination campaign targeted designated vulnerable groups of individuals that were identified in consultation with the National Advisory Group on Immunization (NAGI). The priority groups include adults or children at high risk for influenza-related complications because of underlying medical conditions including: chronic pulmonary disease (including asthma), cardiovascular disease (except hypertension), renal, hepatic, neurologic, haematologic or metabolic disorders (including diabetes mellitus), morbid obesity (BMI ≥40). The total population of the vulnerable groups identified in the provinces amounts to about one half of a million.
